Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Overview

The kidneys are very important to the overall health of everyone. These two fist-sized organs provide a life-sustaining function of removing harmful wastes from your body. Healthy kidneys provide the following critical functions:

  • Removing of extra water and waste
  • Helping control blood pressure
  • Balancing body chemicals
  • Keeping bones strong
  • Signaling the body to produce red blood cells
  • Aiding in children’s normal growth development

If your kidneys are unable to consistently complete their various duties, chronic kidney disease develops. Chronic kidney disease is defined as having some type of kidney abnormality or “marker” such as protein in the urine, and having decreased kidney function for three months or longer.
